Iran wants to legalise marriage for under-age females below 10 years
The Iranian parliament has issued a statement saying they regard the country’s law prohibiting marriage for girls under 10 years old as “un-Islamic and illegal”.
"We must regard nine as being the appropriate age for a girl to have reached puberty and qualified to get married,” Mohammad Ali Isfenani, member of the Iranian parliament, said.
Scores of under-age marriages took place in Iran only in the last few weeks.
The bride and groom were both under 14 in many of the cases. The move is met by condemnation from rights’ activists worldwide, as a petition has been launched calling on the Iranian parliament to abolish such move.
