THE MAKING OF A MONARCH:Kate Gave Up Cigarette To Get Pregnant
It was, Kate declared, her last blowout. As she took to the dancefloor, champagne glass in hand, she savoured her final sip of bubbly.
It was the end of June, and Kate and William were enjoying themselves at the wedding party of Kate’s close school friend Alice St John Webster in the depths of Somerset.
The girls played tennis together at Marlborough and had stayed close.
As Kate congratulated Alice on the recent birth of her baby girl, Alice assured her old friend that her time would come soon. They raised a toast and danced the night away.
Kate was on great form and really let her hair down, reports a friend who was there.
‘She had a few glasses of champagne and was throwing herself around on the dancefloor. That was the last time she really did that.’
On return to the Anglesey home she shares with William, Kate secretly embarked on a strict new regime.
Keen to conceive quickly, she quietly consulted her trusted friend Chiara Hunt, a GP, whose father, Jonathan, is a former Royal doctor.
Although Chiara’s sister, Olivia, is a former flame of Prince William, she was one of the few people Kate trusted with her secret that she was planning to start a family.
Armed with plenty of advice, Kate embarked on a strict fertility diet and gave up alcohol. It wasn’t much of a sacrifice, as she has never been a big drinker. But giving up junk food was apparently much harder.
It is thought that if a couple have a baby within six months of acquiring a puppy, the dog is more likely to attack the child that it sees as a rival for attention. But if the dog is already an established member of his family ‘pack’ – as Lupo is – the pet is more likely to welcome the new arrival as one of his own and seek to protect it.
The couple had planned to announce their happy news at Christmas when Kate will be 12 weeks’ pregnant, the time when, by common consent, a pregnancy is deemed to be ‘safe’.
But last week their plans were upended when Kate was taken to hospital after suffering acute morning sickness. Now the Duchess is recuperating at the couple’s London home, Nottingham Cottage in Kensington Palace, while William has returned to work.
The Mail on Sunday has been told the couple are considering skipping Christmas at Sandringham and may instead spend December 25 with Kate’s parents Carole and Michael. ‘It is being discussed but has not yet been decided,’ said a source.
‘Carole is keen for Kate to spend Christmas with the family. It will be their last Christmas at the family home before the Middletons move house. [The family have reportedly bought a £4.7 million, seven-bedroom mansion.]
