Suspected Boko Haram members struck again in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, Wednesday, as a bomb targeted at a moving patrol vehicle of the Joint Task Force (JTF) in Borno exploded at the centre of the town, killing three persons, including the bomber.
The bombing came on a day some members of the sect continued with the distribution of pamphlets in some areas of the town, saying Boko Haram did not agree with the Federal Government on ceasefire.
It was gathered that the pamphlet distribution started Monday evening in the Gwange, Hausari and Old Maiduguri areas of the town with Boko Haram members stating that at no time had the sect agreed with government to cease fire.
Speaking on the explosion in a statement, JTF spokesman, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, confirmed the death of three persons, including the bomber, saying two other persons sustained injuries in the blast.
But residents of the area who spoke to journalists said not less than 10 persons were killed in the explosion as a source, who craved anonymity said he saw more than 10 persons lying lifeless on the streets, with several others sustaining varying degrees of injuries.
According to Musa, "An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) targeted at JTF patrol team exploded at Post Office Roundabout in Maiduguri metropolis at about 1:00 pm on Wednesday 20 February, 2013. The explosion led to the death of three civilians including the bomber and wounded two others. A JTF vehicle was damaged."
On the pamphlets being distributed, Musa said: "The attention of the Joint Task Force Operation Restore Order has been drawn to some leaflets allegedly printed and circulated by Boko Haram terrorists containing message from leader of Jama’atu Ahlus Sunnah Liddawat Wal Jihad, Abubakar Shekau, threatening and warning government, civil servants, politicians, traditional rulers and security agencies that the sect has not made any reconciliation with the government and that it has not declared cease fire."
Musa urged law abiding members of the public to totally disregard such publication and consider it as part of the terrorists’ propaganda strategy to keep the civil populace in captivity and perpetual fear with the view to unleashing more terror on innocent citizens.
