Scores of Boko Haram fighters surrendering their weapons – Army
According to reports from the 'New Telegraph', the Nigerian Army has said that “scores” of Boko Haram fighters, have started surrendering themselves to troops prosecuting the counter-insurgency operations in the North East, now code-named ‘Operation Lafiya Dole’.
While stating that more of the suspected insurgents have shown willingness to toe the line of their repentant former “comrades in arms”, the Army noted that the development was a fallout of new strategies adopted by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant-General Tukur Buratai.
The disclosure was made in a statement signed Sunday by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations (DAPR), Colonel Sani Usman.
It was further disclosed that there were visible signs of “panic” and “hysteria” among the fighters, as revealed by the surrendered members of the sect, which has killed more than 13,000, destroyed property worth million of naira, and displaced about a million people since 2009, when it began its blood-letting campaign.
The statement added that the Army, will carry out screening and deradicalisation of those that have since surrendered, in line with global best practice.
