Shocking : Hundreds Of Tourists Washed Away Tidal Wave As Dam Burst Open

No comments :

They were hoping to catch a glimpse of what is considered to be one of Mother Nature's more unusual spectacles.

However, these tourists unwittingly became part of the show when a huge tidal bore burst through a dam and spilled over the riverbank, sweeping scores of tourists off their feet.

One moment these bystanders stood transfixed at the banks of the Qiantang River in Haining, in east China's Zhejiang province, waiting to witness the natural phenomenon.
Swept away: Police try valiantly to protect the crowds from the tidal surge, including women and children, but the sheer weight and speed of the water carries off everyone in its path The next they were running for their lives as a huge wave came crashing towards them, engulfing the crowds while others looked on helplessly.

While there were no fatalities, more than 20 people weran annual tradition for residents nearby, attracting hundreds of visitors each year.

The astonishing natural phenomenon, which is an abrupt uprising of e injured after the wave swept through the throng, and some had to be be carried to receive medical attention.

Viewing the tidal bore has become river water, happens when the moon's gravity influence tides from the sea, moving them upstream, resulting in the mesmerising bore. More than 20 people were injured by the rogue wave, with many needing to be carried away for treatment.

Despite the authorities warning onlookers to stand back from the river bank, many fail to heed the advice and end up trying to out-run the wave when it heads towards them.

Bores only occur in a few locations throughout the world, usually in areas with a large tidal range and where incoming tides are funnelled into a shallow, narrowing lake or river.

China's Qiantang River boasts the largest bore, up nine metres - or 30 feet high - and travelling up to 25mph.

Air For Sale In China…Sold In Cans

No comments :
China recently experienced its worst air pollution in recorded history. The recent foulness in the air has rekindled a tongue-in-cheek campaign by a multimillionaire who is selling canned fresh air.

Chen Guangbiao, whose wealth came from the recycling business, and is a high-profile philanthropist, on Wednesday handed out soda pop-sized cans of air, purportedly from far-flung regions of China such as Xinjiang in the northwest to Taiwan, the southeast coast where the air is still clean and fresh.

“I want to tell mayors, county chiefs and heads of big companies: don’t just chase GDP growth, don’t chase the biggest profits at the expense of our children and grandchildren and at the cost of sacrificing our ecological environment”, Chen said.

China’s industrialisation over the years has worsen the country’s air quality which is now closely watched as it fluctuates dramatically from day to day, but in recent weeks has registered far into the unhealthy zone.

Air pollution is measured in terms of PM2.5, or particulate matter 2.5 micrometers in diameter, which are absorbed by the lungs and can cause grave heart and lung conditions. The World Health Organisation recommends a daily PM2.5 level of 20 and says that levels greater than 300 are serious health hazards.

Beijing’s air quality frequently surges past a level of 500, and on January 12 soared to 755, the highest in memory.

“I go outside, walk for about 20 minutes, and my throat hurts and I feel dizzy”, Chen told Reuters in an interview on a busy Beijing sidewalk.

He handed out green and orange cans of “Fresh Air”, with a caricature of himself on them saying, “Chen Guangbiao is a good man”.

“Be a good person, have a good heart, do good things,” reads a message along the bottom of each can.

The 44-year-old entrepreneur, whose wealth is estimated at $740 million according to last year’s Hurun Rich List of China’s super-wealthy, is an ebullient and tireless self-promoter.

He is something of a celebrity in China, with more than 4 million followers on Sina Weibo, China’s most popular Twitter-like microblogging platform.

He concedes that his canned-air effort is tongue in cheek, but says it’s a way to awaken people to the importance of environmental protection. His campaign is attracting bemusement but also plaudits from the media and from people desperate to escape the smog.

“Beijing’s air really needs to improve, so we need a good man like him to appear,” said a 21-year-old resident surnamed Hu. “It reminds people to use less fuel and do what they can for Beijing’s air”.

The cans of air were free on Wednesday, but usually sell for 5 yuan (80 cents) with proceeds going to poor regions of China, and places of historic revolutionary importance.

Sales, which had been moderate, took off after the recent streak of bad air days, with 8 million cans sold in the last 10 days, Chen said. [Reuters]

Landslide buries 18 schoolchildren in China

No comments :

A landslide buried 18 Chinese elementary school students studying during a public holiday Thursday to make up for classes disrupted by recent earthquakes in southwest China, state media reported.

Rescuers have so far recovered four students' bodies as they scour through rubble at a village in Yunnan Province after the landslide struck the school and two houses, the state broadcaster CCTV reported.

A village resident was buried in one of the houses, the state news agency Xinhua said. A family of three managed to flee before the landslide hit.

Images carried by state media showed men digging with spades on a mound of mud and rocks at the bottom of a steep hillside.

The landslide followed several days of rain, Yang Jianping, squadron leader of Yiliang County Armed Police said in an interview with CCTV. A military rescue team of 50 soldiers has been dispatched to the area, he said.

The village is in Yiliang county, which was hit by a series of earthquakes on September 7 that killed at least 80 people and injured hundreds.

The students were studying to catch up after the earthquakes prompted the suspension of classes for about 20 days, state-run Chinanews.com said, citing the county education commissioner, Li Zhong.

The landslide "engulfed" the primary school, and authorities have relocated other residents to safer locations, Xinhua reported.

A woman who answered the phone at the county education commission's office did not provide CNN with any details. She said officials authorized to talk to the media are out helping with rescue efforts. Calls to the local information office rang unanswered

China, Japan shadow boxing over rocks - for now

No comments :
The dispute between China and Japan over a desolate jumble of rocky islets in the East China Sea has taken a familiar turn with Beijing deploying a fleet of paramilitary patrol ships while similar Japanese vessels steam out in response.

As in earlier disputes over rocks and shoals in the South China Sea, Beijing is relying on these vessels rather than more menacing warships to assert its sovereignty over the disputed islands known as Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan.

For both sides, the presence of lightly armed paramilitary ships reduces the risk of conflict, maritime experts say, while they retain the option of deploying more firepower if the dispute intensifies.

However, unlike China's recent sparring with the Philippines over Scarborough Shoal, this flare-up pits East Asia's two maritime powers against each other in a confrontation loaded with military risk.

If a clash erupted, experts warn it could be difficult to contain to the disputed area and would likely draw in the United States, Japan's security alliance partner, into hostilities with China.

The U.S. assistant secretary of state for East Asia, Kurt Campbell, said on Thursday the disputed islands were "clearly" covered by a 1960 treaty obliging the United States to come to Japan's aid if attacked.
